2019 is coming to an end and I have completed one year in the FONTE project. I would like to take this opportunity to write my first blog which is about my experience so far.

Two years ago, I did not imagine that I would be going out of India in the near future. I have interest in the field of fiber-optic technology. I feel fortunate to get accepted for the EID position in the project FONTE. It is a great opportunity to work with some of the experts in the field of fiber-optic communication from industry as well as academia. I traveled to my university TU Delft in the month of December. This was my first visit to a foreign country. I had mixed feeling of fear of new place and excitation. In the beginning, I missed my home and friends as well as the Sun. The people in TU Delft were welcoming and supportive. Here in the picture below, I am with some of my colleagues.

Happy faces after winning the pub-quiz competition in department.

I started working on really interesting topics. I had opportunity to meet the people from different culture, backgrounds and languages. I enjoyed visiting some of the beautiful cities of Netherlands full of canals and breath-taking views.

Visit to the House of Representatives of the Netherlands with colleagues.

Later on, I had opportunities to meet with the people from FONTE consortium, which was really nice. In the first year, I got one publication in ECOC-2019 conference. Many thanks to my supervisors and colleagues for their support. I am in Stuttgart now, to complete my industrial secondment. The tasks in the To Do list are to get some nice influential results, learn the German language and explore the beautiful places around.

Beautifully lit  famous square of Stuttgart center during this Christmas.

The year 2019 went very well and brought lots of learning. Working in  FONTE, I am expanding my knowledge in the research. Finally, I thank the co-coordinator for keeping us on the project timeline. I appreciate the FONTE team and MSCA for providing me a platform to excel.

I wish you all a successful year ahead. Happy new year!

Achievement: Record Single-Channel Data Rate Transmission over the Standard Optical Fiber

Hello everybody, It is a great pleasure to share that recently our work has received much appreciation. We set a new world record on the single-channel data rate of the standard optical fiber. In this blog, I share our work in brief. Our work is about mitigating the distortions and thus, increasing the transmission capacity of fiber-optic communication systems. These systems carry 99% of today’s internet traffic and are under pressure due to an exponential rise in bandwidth-hungry services such as video conferencing, HD video streaming and online gaming. In order to increase the data-carrying capacity of networks while keeping a lower cost, researchers and industries around the world are working hard to achieve higher capacity per fiber. The innovation is usually applied at transmitters and receivers where information bits are encoded into higher modulation format symbols (i.e. multiple amplitudes and phase levels of light), and then, those symbols are transmitted at rates ...

My Work From Home Experience

Hello everyone, It has been long since I wrote my previous blog. So, here I am writing another blog in which I share my “work from home” experience. I was in the period of my industrial secondment to Nokia Bell Labs, Stuttgart when the strict measures to contain COVID-19 were imposed. We were not allowed to go to office unless it was necessary. But working from home was something that most of the people are not used to. It was a total surprise for me. In the beginning days, I had a hard time to push myself out of the bed in the morning and start working. In addition, I did not have a proper study table and chair in my room. It was nice that Nokia Stuttgart offered to take laptop accessories (keyboard, monitor) home for time being. But sooner, I realized that the work from home scenario will last longer and turned my room into office. Once things were fixed, I was on my track. Although little disturbances were always there because of noisy road that goes along my room. Sometimes dur...
